Film Review: Bad Lieutenant Port Of Call New Orleans

Bad Lieutenant Port Of Call New Orleans:

Jesus. I dunno if this was good or bad cos i never can tell with Nic Cage movies anymore but regardless of that important minuscule detail i really really enjoyed watchin it. Just to clarify that in no way makes it good either. I don't even know if Cage is acting half the time - what with his variety of idiotic wigs and sinister face gurns constantly on show in every film he's in - and none more so than in this role where he plays a drugged up unfortunate fuckhead of a cop. I swear half the stuff that goes on in this film leaves you thinkin its all one big hallucination but its not. Maybe. I dunno. Ask the iguana's.

All i can say is that Warner Herzog must be a fruit and nutbar too, i've heard stories like but c'mon sunshine -you're directing a fucking film like, have some formula to it all. i wouldn't be shocked if i found out him and Nic Cage were having a competition to see who could comes across the craziest while making this. Hopefully there'll be a directors cut at some stage and more zaniness will be revealed.

The film itself is - well - a Nic Cage film so if you enjoy watching the man either be very very good (Raising Arizona, Face/Off) or very very bad (Next/ The Wicker Man) but most importantly enjoy his films either way (like i do) then this'll be right up your alley. It is by no means in the good category - but because of my love of the man i wouldnt place it in the bad category either. It is what it is. A Nic Cage film. You should always be aware when watching a Nic Cage film because if one comes on the television unexpectedly you should run and hide in case it's something like Knowing and you are subjected to him beating up an innocent tree with a baseball bat for no reason. These things happen in Nic Cage films. These things and wigs.

Anywho, the supporting cast is criminally under-used and im not entirely sure but it kinda comes across like they ran outta financing towards the end or something cos there's really no need to have a film with : Michael Shannon, Val Kilmer, Jennifer Coolidge, Fairuza Balk, Brad Dourif, Shawn Hatosy, Shea Whigham & Vondie Curtis-Hall in it and then barely use any of them for long periods - if at all. I mean why go for star power for bit-part pointless roles??? I dunno. Maybe there was a bigger plan but it didn't work out.

X to the Z and Eva Mendes are decent in it but overall it's just Nic Cage runnin about actin the fruitbat and no harm to B.L.P.O.C.N.W. and it's haters but that works ok for me. The other half was a bit nonplussed by it but by the end she was laughin her head off at the ridiculousness of it all. Some of the scenes are just 100% "what the f*ck" moments.
After a while even the haters will have a laugh at the absurdity of it all.

I would recommend Bad Lieutenant Port Of Call New Orleans to people who enjoy Cage at his Cage-iest but to the others i would definitely have a word of warning before hand, this is not a film for people who like films; it is a film for people who like Nicolas Cage films. And i am one of them.

Surprisingly oddball-tastic. Highly recommended for those who ignore recommendations. 3 / 5

Also for Nic Cage fans - here's his important scenes from DEADFALL in bout 35 seconds. Enjoy.

I do love me some Cage!
