Film Review: Kabluey
Kabluey: I was watchin this when falling asleep anf it toatally woke me up. Kabluey is the tale of a useless family member who's called on to help his sister-in-law look after her life while her husband's away in the war. Written, directed by and starring Scott Prendergast it is one of the most fufilling films i have seen in quite a while. Its not schmaltzy or corny and not really particularly laugh-out-loud funny but it is genuine and warm and it left me with a renewed sense that there is filmmakers out there who dont have to go hollywood on everybodys asses! Basically it deals with how one man eventually learns what it is to be a man, through the responsabilities of looking after loved ones (in many shapes and forms) in getting a job and keeping it and even in learning how it is to become an active member of society. The cast are all so under-stated and realistic - even lisa kudrow took her role and totally made me understand how that character could get to where she was at in her life, Scott Prendergast himself is a total legend, his character, Salman, is like an amalgation of so many people i know and i could feel an affinity to him no matter how awkward a situation he found himself in. I wasnt expecting a lot from this at all an mayeb that was a good thing. I thoroughly thoroughly enjoyed this film and it deserves a much wider audience so that it can be appreciate even more. A lovely bitter-sweet comedy of sorts. Very much recommended. 4.5 / 5
