Film Review: Frequency

Frequency: I've been meaning to watchg Frequency for ages but never got around to puttin it on til this weekend. It's directed by Gregory Hoblit who made Untraceable, Fracture and Primal Fear which i all really enjoyed. He also made Fallen which is one of my favourite films of all time - i can't ever hear The Rolling Stones' Time Is On My Side without thinkin of that film, it really is great & if anyone hasnt seen it then i'd recommend it highly. Anwyho onto Frequency; its a great concept of a film that involves a son being able to communicate using an old ham-radio to his father who is 30 years in the past (or the son is 30 years in the future, depending on who's side you're looking at). He tries to right the wrongs that happened his dear ol' dad but whatever little thing they do manage to change/alters the course of history so much so that even what has been told to us on screen may not have happeend now in the films reality. In a nutshell you're watchin a film that isnt a film and you have no idea what just happened or whether this writing im doing is actually writing or has it just happened yesterday and will it still be the same tomorrow. So yeah, lucky i wasnt too wiped out or i wouldnt have had a fucking notion - not that i did. All the time. Or at least i thought i did some of the time.

Anyways, yeah, its all very confusing but thats what made it good for me. That one selling-point - the ability to not trust in what was going on in front of you - opened up a variety of possibilities and time-travel like corrections. You never knew what you should be paying attention to and sometimes the stuff that seemed really important would just be all forgotten in an instant. It was equally captivating and frustrating at the same time. The better half enjoyed it up to a point -then it slightly veered off and she lost interest a bit - i can see why, but for me i really enjoyed the whole experience throughly. As you can probably tell from the first paprgraph i pretty much like anything Hoblit does tho so i wasnt suprised when this one added itself to the list.

Jesus was really good in this as Jim Caviezel and Juilette outta LOST was looking quite ravishing as a bruenette but overall the only reason i watched this apart from the diretor was for The Quaid Factor. Love me some Quaid i do. In this Dennis Quaid plays Dennis Quaid. A man you wish you grew up with. A man who works hard all day, comes home, plays with the kids and gives the missus a cheeky wink when its time to put them to bed. I'd love a Dennis Quiad-type uncle. He'd always buy you what you wanted for Christmas unlike Uncle Randy who'd piss it all away then make a last-ditch attempt at being heroic by going and fighting aliens while smashed on Buckfast. Anywho, Quaid, Jeff Bridges & Tim Robbins i can pretty much watch in anythin anytime. They're all fantastic actors when they're on top form and even though this got a bit schmaltzy with baseball flashbacks and the like all in all it was a really enjoyable watch for me. It wasnt fantastically amazing or anything and i may be slightly biased here but im giving this a solid review for being my fucking cup of tea. Check it out if you're bored - but if you're really that bored i'd definately recommend Fallen instead. 3 / 5

Film Review: Let The Right One In

Let The Right One In: Its as good as everybody says. Its not a vampire film - its a love story. Kind of. The better half reckons it was more like an update on Dracula an the more i think about it shes right, she a smart cookie that one. When you really start thinkin about the film tho it disturbs you in ways you dont want to be disturbed, im not for sayin anythin but once you see it an think for a while you'll know. Its scenary all looks so magical with the snow covered jumgle jim and such and the acting is - dont care if this sounds gay - the acting is beautiful. the hatred and anger an love and disgust you feel from it is fuckin superb - why the f*ck cant half of the other films ive watched even have half of that beauty? Watch it and do not expect a lost boys or dusk til dawn - instead expect a story to remind you of the days when your dad would read to you in bed from a book, expect a fable of different proportions an most importantly expect to be entertained. Highly recommended. 4/5

Film Review: Merry Madagascar

Got up this morning and put on Merry Madagascar.
Twas very very very enjoyable and very short too - its perfect for little ones who enjoyed the first two installments and the tv show so much. Its also pretty perfect for big ones who still are little ones at heart too.
They have nearly all the main stars back which is quite impressive and i love the absurdity of it all - especially that its now in a christmas-related way.
The penguins kick so much ass its AMAZING!!!!! But alas there is no sight of the monkeys in this which makes me sad.
Also the only star not to return was Sacha Baron-Cohen - which was a bit disappointing - altho Danny Jacobs does a freakin excellent job of recreating the craziness of King Julien as anyone who watches The Penguins Of Madagascar will already know.

Overall i got a bit caught up in it all (early morning + late night + stober hangover = potential emotional damage) but more than anything it was the JOY of Christmas that got me right there in the soft spot. I LOVE CHRISTMAS and anything related - including Jingle All The Way- so this worked perfectly fine for me.
Get the Bobby Helms & Dino records out - cos christmas time is a coming!
Fantastic feel-good festive fun! 4 / 5
